For the Love of Jazz

Jazz can be defined pretty broadly, so I’m sure not everyone will agree. I believe it was Bill Evans who said, “jazz is not a what, but a how.” For me, what defines jazz is not so much a particular kind of sound, or even a time feel, but an improvisational approach to creating music. It’s about the musical content being generated in the present. There are parameters, which can be very strict or very loose, but even within this stricter framework, there are decisions being made constantly about what and how to play. As opposed to the classical approach, in which the performer has some license to interpret, but is mainly trying to perfectly execute what a composer has written, note for note.
