Charles Mingus: Fables of Faubus

Charles Mingus was a brilliant musician with a huge personality who utilized the stage as an instrument for social progress. His tune “Fables of Faubus” originally featured some biting lyrics, calling out the insidious and racist actions of then Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, who called in the Arkansas National Guard to try and prevent nine Black students (The Little Rock Nine) from integrating at Little Rock Central High School in 1957.

The crisis in Little Rock lasted over a year, and despite threats, endless taunting and physical abuse, nearly all the Little Rock Nine persevered and attended the school.
